Eagles' Darius Slay blasts MetLife Stadium turf after latest injury

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay became the latest noteworthy individual to blast the turf used at MetLife Stadium after Eagles safety Sydney Brown suffered a torn ACL during this past Sunday's loss at the New York Giants.

"First things first, Giants, please get your turf fixed," Slay said about what's found at the home of the Giants and New York Jets during the latest edition of the "Big Play Slay" podcast, per Chris Franklin of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. "You have two owners. You can split it 50-50. You really can split it 50-50. If you really need players to help donate, we’ll help donate. There are tragic injuries there every year."

The FieldTurf Core system installed at MetLife Stadium following the 2022 campaign quickly became widely unpopular among players during this past regular season.

Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson said in October that the MetLife Stadium turf was "garbage," and members of the Houston Texans later blamed the "trash" surface after multiple players went down with injuries during a game against the Jets in December.

Retired players and New York sports radio hosts Tiki Barber and Boomer Esiason campaigned during the fall for the Giants and Jets to fix MetLife's "horrendous" turf. It's unclear if the clubs will make any significant changes this offseason.

"That (bleep) needs to go," Slay told NJ Advance Media about the MetLife turf on Wednesday. "They have two owners who can split that cost in half and save some money. I’ll let them do what they need to do on one hand, but that (bleep) is bad. Guys are falling out of nowhere, but I hope they figure that out and get that stuff situated so it is healthier for the guys to play on."

No NFL games will occur at MetLife Stadium until the 2024 preseason gets underway in August, as both the Giants and Jets failed to qualify for the postseason tournament. As for the 11-6 Eagles, they'll face the 9-8 Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a wild-card playoff showdown this coming Monday night.

According to ESPN, Tampa Bay's Raymond James Stadium features natural Tifway 419 Bermuda grass.
