Eagles, Jalen Hurts make history with massive contract extension

Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles made history on Monday in multiple ways after agreeing to a five-year contract extension.

While the amount of money the Eagles are committing to the 24-year-old is a hefty sum, the new deal and exorbitant contract aren't a surprise. Every year, big-name players across the NFL are capitalizing on huge seasons to sign record-breaking deals.

In February, star wide receiver A.J. Brown called for general manager Howie Roseman to get a new contract done for Hurts, otherwise he would think about leaving town. The signal-caller had been slated to make a $4.2M base salary in the 2023 season.

Hurts is likely not even in his prime yet and was not only a Pro Bowler and the MVP runner-up for the 2022 campaign, but he nearly led Philadelphia past the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII in February.

While the Eagles blew a big lead to the Chiefs on the big stage and lost 38-35, Hurts dominated by going 27-for-38 for 304 passing yards, one touchdown, no interceptions and a 103.4 quarterback rating.

He added a quarterback-record 70 rushing yards on 15 attempts and matched Terrell Davis' Super Bowl record of three rushing scores. If Philadelphia had held on and won, Hurts surely would've been named the Super Bowl MVP.

Now, with the former second-round pick locked in for at least five more years, the Eagles have a great shot at eventually returning to try and win their second Super Bowl title.
