Eagles reportedly sign key position coach to extension
NFL teams that make it to the Super Bowl commonly have their staffs poached, but in the Philadelphia Eagles' case, one key coach is staying put.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Eagles have agreed to a contract extension with offensive line coach and run game coordinator Jeff Stoutland. Stoutland received interest from several teams with vacant offensive coordinator positions, but the Eagles' now legendary position coach is going nowhere.
Hired ahead of the 2013 season, Stoutland's rise in Philadelphia may be the only thing Eagles fans can give Chip Kelly credit for during his short tenure as head coach. After Kelly's firing in 2016, Doug Pederson retained Stoutland, and in 2021, Nick Sirianni smartly did the same.
Largely credited for the Eagles' stout — no pun intended — offensive line and bruising run game, Stoutland has been and continues to be essential to the team's success.
Under Stoutland, the Eagles' offensive line finished the year ranked No. 1 in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus. Per PFF, four of the Eagles' starting o-lineman rank among the top 10 at their positions, including Jordan Mailata (10th), Isaac Seumalo (9th), Lane Johnson (5th), and Jason Kelce (2nd).
Meanwhile, the Eagles led the league in rushing touchdowns with 32 and ranked fifth in the league in rushing yards per game (147.6) and total yards on the ground (2,509).
Stoutland is the latest member of the coaching staff to commit to the team past the Super Bowl. Despite receiving interest from the Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans for their head coaching jobs, defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon said after the Eagles' NFC Championship Game victory over the San Francisco 49ers, "Philly's keeping me, good, bad or indifferent."
