The Eagles have agreed to terms with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens, the team announced on Twitter Monday morning. Mullens went undrafted in the 2017 NFL Draft and has been on and off San Francisco’s active roster and practice squad over the last three seasons.

Mullens isn’t an exciting name, but he’s a competent backup quarterback who, at the very least, will be able to make all of the throws in training camp and take meaningful snaps in preseason games. Here are his numbers over the last three seasons via Pro-Football-Reference:

After waiving 2021 UDFA Jamie Newman last week, the Eagles were down to just two quarterbacks on their 90-man roster: second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts and 36-year-old Joe Flacco. Even if just to be able to run effective practices in training camp, they needed to add another quarterback.

Mullens is intriguing in that, despite being an undrafted quarterback in 2017, he has actually played in 19 games over the last three seasons and has had some success. He has also looked terrible at times and has 25 touchdown passes against 22 interceptions, but he was often leading some terrible offenses on banged-up 49ers teams.

Eagles fans will remember Mullens from Week 4 of this past season when he lost 20-25 to the Eagles at home and threw a couple of interceptions. One of those interceptions was this pick-six to linebacker Alex Singleton, which is one of the worst throws and/or decisions I’ve ever seen on a football field:

The Eagles signing Nick Mullens isn’t the big news that fans were anticipating (as we go another month without a Zach Ertz trade), but it was a necessary move. To be determined if he is able to stick around, but he’s a useful quarterback for the room for the time being.
