Ex-GM lists AFC team as a great destination for five-time Pro Bowler

Is Miami an under-the-radar destination for recently released wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins? Former NFL general manager Randy Mueller, a contributor for The Athletic, listed the Dolphins as a potential destination because its offense suits Hopkins.

"Wide receivers Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill have rare explosiveness that would almost guarantee a player of Hopkins' skills to draw single coverage every single time," he wrote.

Imagine a Waddle, Hill and Hopkins trio. It would unquestionably be one of the best receiving corps in the NFL. Hopkins is a five-time Pro Bowler; Hill has made four Pro Bowls. Waddle broke out last season, finishing seventh in the NFL in receiving yards (1,356) and first in yards per reception (18.1).

The Dolphins can, and should, make this happen. Per Spotrac, Miami only has $1.13M in cap space, but it will gain $13.6M following their June 1 cut of cornerback Byron Jones. Head coach Mike McDaniel believes the cap room could allow the Dolphins to make a splash.

"Not sure where, but I feel confident to say we'll make good use of that salary cap room when it comes to the start of the regular season," McDaniel said Wednesday, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

Per Mueller, Hopkins seeks a similar deal to the one Odell Beckham Jr. signed with Baltimore (a one-year, $15M deal with $13.85M guaranteed). That's still a financial stretch for Miami, but the benefits of Hopkins could outweigh the costs.

Hopkins, 30, has indicated he wants to play for a contender such as Kansas City, last season's Super Bowl champs. Miami went 9-8 and made the playoffs last season, but it's not in the same tier as the AFC powerhouse. However, Miami could still offer a better contract. The Chiefs are last in cap space ($1.10M).

Regardless, the Dolphins should kick the tires on Hopkins, who could take them to the next level.
