Falcons RB Todd Gurley prepared to sit out if NFL, NFLPA can't agree on coronavirus plan

All signs are pointing toward the NFL season beginning on time. However, no plan regarding the coronavirus pandemic has been agreed upon, and Todd Gurley is beginning to feel wary.

The Atlanta Falcons running back is prepared to sit out the 2020 season if the NFL and NFL Players Association can't come up with a good plan for playing football safely amid growing COVID-19 concerns.

“It’s really not structured right,” Gurley said on Tiki and Tierney, according to Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith. “There’s not a proper plan in place that I’m comfortable with. I don’t have a wife. I don’t have any kids. But you have to look at guys on the other side who have pregnant wives, kids and a wife that they go home to every single day. I just feel like in general we just need to come up with something a lot better than what they’re giving us. Everything they gave us is pretty last minute. We should have been able to have answers weeks ago, if not months ago.”

The league and union are in ongoing discussions to create a plan that satisfies everyone across the board, though they'll have to speed up negotiations if they don't want things to get in the way of NFL training camps which are slated to begin on July 28.

If Gurley decides to sit out, he won't be the only player to do so due to coronavirus concerns. Both Devin and Jason McCourty have been highly speculative of playing football this season amid the pandemic, and various collegiate football programs around the country are weighing their options ... some even already have canceled.

The Falcons certainly will be missing Gurley if he decides to sit out after acquiring him following his release from the Los Angeles Rams in March. The 25-year-old rushed for 857 yards and 12 touchdowns last season while adding 207 yards and two touchdowns receiving. It was a down year by his standards, though the Rams struggled greatly last season and went 9-7.
