The thick of free agency has passed for the most part but still, some players remain out there for teams.

One former draft pick of the Cleveland Browns is getting a fresh start in the NFL that is overdue.

Linebacker Jacob Phillips has a successful workout with the Houston Texans that has led to him signing a one-year deal with the team.

Phillips has had it rough in the NFL when it comes to injuries and season-ending injuries. Cleveland selected Phillips in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of LSU and he played just nine games his rookie season.

A biceps injury in 2021 forced Phillips to the injured reserve and then a pectoral injury did the same thing in 2022. During the 2023 preseason, Phillips suffered another pectoral injury that forced him to miss the entire season.

In four seasons with the Browns, Phillips played in just 20 games with eight starts to his name. The LSU product has 88 tackles and three sacks to his name in Cleveland.

Having played just seven games since 2021 due to injury, Phillips has to prove he can stay healthy to make the Texans roster. If he can do that, then he’s going to stick around because he has been a sound tackler in the NFL, the biggest problem has always been the health.

Phillips lands on his feet and now has a chance to make his mark with the Texans, the team that eliminated Cleveland from the playoffs last season.
