A former Buffalo Bills wide receiver is set to be available in free agency this offseason after the Jacksonville Jaguars announced they were releasing him from the team on Tuesday morning. The Jaguars addressed their wide receiver in the draft after losing Calvin Ridley to the Tennessee Titans in free agency in March.

The Jacksonville Jaguars upgraded at WR in the draft

The Jaguars used their first-round pick to select LSU standout wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. to boost their receiver corps. They added several other needed positions, ESPN going heavy on the defensive line. They also drafted kicker Cam Little in the sixth round.

Former Buffalo Bills WR gets cut on Tuesday

With Thomas and Little set to play on their roster this fall, the Jaguars announced two cuts. They released wide receiver Zay Jones and kicker Joey Slye.

Zay Jones is headed to free agency

The Bills selected Jones in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He stayed with the Bills until he was traded to the Oakland Raiders in October 2019. In March 2022, he signed a three-year deal with the Jaguars.

Jones has recorded 281 receptions for 2,981 yards and 18 touchdowns in his seven-year NFL career.

The Jaguars didn’t have as much use for Jones in the upcoming season after they added two key wide receivers this offseason. In addition to Thomas, the Jaguars signed former Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis in free agency.

The Bills could try to sign Jones in free agency to provide depth to their receiver corps. The Bills drafted Keon Coleman with their first pick in the draft this year, but the team still has much work to do to improve the unit.
