Former Commanders QB says he’s in talks to join group bidding on team

Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder reportedly received a bid for $6 billion to buy the franchise from a group that includes former NBA star Magic Johnson, and now former Commanders quarterback Robert Griffin III may soon be a part of the group.

During a recent interview with “The Rich Eisen Show,” Griffin III disclosed that he’s had discussions to join the Josh Harris/Mitchell Rales group, which has placed the highest reported bid for the franchise.

“I’ve been having some really great conversations with this group and having an opportunity to come in on that ownership group,” Griffin III said. “So, I’m head over heels excited about that process. To be a player for that team, to not have my career go the way that I wanted it to, or the fans wanted it to in that city, would be a full-circle type of moment to come back and try to help that team and that organization build a winner that the fans deserve.”

Griffin III, who was drafted No. 2 overall by Washington in 2012, has long been a critic of Snyder. The 33-year-old QB-turned-analyst even planned to write a tell-all book exposing Snyder and the toxic culture of the Commanders in 2022 but the idea was eventually scrapped.

Snyder has been the subject of several investigations for inappropriate workplace culture and misuse of finances.

“At the end of the day, the fans will throw a parade when Dan Snyder is out the door,” Griffin III added. “Since I left in 2015, it’s just been one thing after another. And I think the team is ready to move on, I think the fans are ready to move on. …I know the fans will rejoice and I think that because of that dark cloud, it is time to move on. The relationship has run its course.”

CBS Sports reported that Snyder has as many as four bidders for the Commanders and that he expects to make a decision on the sale within one to three weeks. Canadian billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos submitted a fully funded $6 billion offer for the Commanders as well.
