The Green Bay Packers shocked the sports world back in April when they traded up for Utah State quarterback Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Green Bay boasts one of the greatest quarterbacks in modern league history in that of the 36-year-old Aaron Rodgers. The trade for Love seems to suggest that the Packers will soon move on from their future Hall of Fame signal caller. It’s also been met with widespread criticism.
After a questionable offseason in Green Bay, former NFL star Brandon Marshall didn't hold back when discussing how the Packers have managed the roster with Rodgers under center.
It’s really hard to argue with Marshall here. Despite last season’s run to the NFC Championship Game, the Packers proved that they were a couple of tiers below the eventual conference champion San Francisco 49ers. Nothing this offseason has changed that.
Overall, the Packers have earned a playoff spot in nine of Rodgers’ 13 seasons as their starting quarterback. They have advanced to the conference championship round just four times. Given how dominant Rodgers has been, this is unacceptable.
Having faced Rodgers for three seasons as a division rival with the Chicago Bears, Marshall knows what he’s talking about here. Rodgers’ statistical dominance is something to behold.
He’s thrown for nearly 47,000 yards with 364 touchdowns and just 84 interceptions throughout his career. That’s good enough for a 102.4 rating. For comparison’s sake, Joe Montana finished his career with a 92.3 career passer rating.
Should Rodgers’ tenure with the Packers come to an abrupt end soon without a second Super Bowl title, a lot will be made about how they wasted one of the greatest quarterbacks in modern NFL history. That’s for sure.
