Giants' Brian Daboll discusses starting Tommy DeVito

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll discussed his decision to start undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito at quarterback until further notice, largely because Daboll can't do much else regarding the position.

"I think he’s a good young quarterback to work with," Daboll said, per Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. "Try to improve him this week from last week. He’s done a good job improving. He’s a young quarterback, so [there are] a lot of things you go through."

Week 1 starter Daniel Jones missed time earlier this fall with a lingering neck issue and then went down with a season-ending torn ACL on Nov. 5. Meanwhile, primary backup Tyrod Taylor is on injured reserve due to an injury to his ribs he suffered on Oct. 29.

Daboll and company clearly didn't trust DeVito to do much against the New York Jets after Taylor was sidelined in Week 8, and the 25-year-old largely looked overwhelmed over the past two games until those contests became blowouts. DeVito has completed 31-of-54 pass attempts (57.4%) for 260 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He's also added 70 rushing yards and a single score on the ground.

Journeyman Matt Barkley is currently serving as New York's QB2.

Slater noted that Taylor isn't eligible to return until the club's Week 14 matchup against the Green Bay Packers that follows the Giants' bye. Daboll declined to say on Wednesday if Taylor will be available for that game on Dec. 11.

"He’s making progress," Daboll said about Taylor. "Each day, he’s making a little bit of progress. I just know from the trainers and doctors that he’s making progress. We’ll see where it goes."

For now, DeVito will guide the 2-8 Giants into this Sunday's game at the 4-6 Washington Commanders. As of Wednesday afternoon, oddschecker listed the Giants as 9.5-point underdogs against the Commanders.
