Giants bring back QB Davis Webb on reserve/future contract

The New York Giants have once again taken from the Buffalo Bills and, in the process, sparked an interesting reunion nobody saw coming only a few weeks ago.

Per Dan Salomone of the team's website, the Giants officially signed quarterback Davis Webb and punter Jamie Gillan to reserve/future contracts on Monday.

As Ryan Dunleavy noted for the New York Post, reports surfaced earlier in the day Webb was likely returning to the Giants. The team selected him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft but then waived him in September 2018 after he spent a year sitting behind club legend Eli Manning.

Webb was attached to the Bills over the past three seasons, where he was recently coached by then-offensive coordinator and newly named Giants head coach Brian Daboll. Daboll was hired by former Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen shortly after Schoen became the new Big Blue general manager last month.

Per ESPN stats, Webb has never completed or attempted a pass during an NFL regular-season game but could now earn the right to compete with former Bills practice squad signal-caller Jake Fromm for the right to serve as Daniel Jones' main backup next summer and fall. According to Dunleavy, the Bills offered Webb an opportunity to make the transition to coaching this winter, but the 27-year-old instead wished to attempt to extend his playing career.

Both Schoen and Daboll have suggested early into their New York tenures Jones will remain atop the depth chart through the offseason. The Giants must make a decision about the fifth-year option attached to Jones' rookie contract this spring.
