Giants catching Jalen Hurts, Eagles at just the right time?

Sometimes even great players beat themselves. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has a 4-2 record against the Giants, but given his recent play, a third loss could be coming on Christmas Day.

After flirting with an MVP award in 2022 and carrying his team to an NFC championship, Hurts has struggled for most of 2023. Even as the team jumped out to a 10-1 record, something seemed off with the 25-year-old quarterback. 

Hurts had seven interceptions by Week 6, a 20-14 loss to the Zach Wilson-led Jets, after throwing just six interceptions in all of 2022. Hurts threw three interceptions in the loss, his first game with three picks since Week 12 of 2021, a 13-7 loss to the Giants.

That game would be Hurts worst of the season, completing just 45.2% of his passes for 129 yards and no touchdowns while averaging 4.2 yards per attempt. He never got near those numbers in 2022 and most of 2023. In fact, he hadn’t played like that until Monday’s night’s game in Seattle.

Hurts set season-lows across the board against the Seahawks by completing 54.8% of his passes for 143 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. His 40.1 quarterback rating was his lowest since the 17.5 he put up in the 2021 loss to Giants.

With the NFC East up for grabs, Hurts couldn’t have picked a worse time to play some of his worst football. While he’s been able to “tush-push” his way to three scores during the team’s current three-game losing streak, he’s only thrown a single touchdown.
