Giants' Daniel Jones addresses uncertain future

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones campaigned for himself to remain atop the depth chart through the start of next season following a campaign that was disappointing for everyone involved for multiple reasons.

"I’m confident in myself, confident in my abilities," Jones told reporters on Monday, as shared by Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post. "Anything I’ve gotten from the coaches or management has been belief or confidence in me."

Giants general manager Joe Schoen insisted during his end-of-season news conference on Monday morning he has the same faith in Jones as he did when the club signed the 2019 first-round draft pick in March 2023 to a four-year contract that could be worth up to $160M. Jones missed the final six games of the 2021 season because of a neck injury, was sidelined for three contests this past fall due to a similar issue and then went down with a torn ACL on Nov. 5.

"Each of those injuries are different circumstances and situational things that come up," Jones said on Monday. "But I’m confident I’ll be healthy."

Jones mostly failed to impress while in the lineup this season. Across fewer than six completed games, he tossed only two touchdown passes and six interceptions. In mock drafts updated on Monday, Ryan Wilson and Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports both predicted that Schoen will use a first-round draft choice to acquire Jones' eventual replacement this spring.

The Giants reportedly can financially afford to move on from Jones' deal after the 2024 season.

"The goal is to be back by training camp," Jones said about his recovery, "and I feel like I’m making good progress."

Schoen confirmed Monday he likely will grab a quarterback via the draft or free agency this offseason. Whether or not Jones will be the club's starter whenever he's ready to face a live defense later this year shall be seen.
