Giants QB Daniel Jones underwent neck procedure during offseason

Before the New York Giants hired Joe Schoen as general manager and Brian Daboll as head coach this past winter, Big Blue quarterback Daniel Jones missed the final six games of last season due to what was initially referred to as a strained neck.

Jones raised eyebrows when he suggested during his campaign-closing comments in January that there would be "no contact for me until August," but the 2019 first-round draft pick was ultimately fully cleared for football activities and contact well ahead of training camp.

Jones offered an interesting update on his health while speaking with reporters on Thursday.

According to Kevin Armstrong of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com and Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, Jones confirmed that he underwent what he called a "non-football-related procedure" on his neck over the winter. New questions about the previously known issue arose after social-media users spotted a scar on Jones' throat under his Adam's-apple area.

Jones insisted the scar is not at all related to the problem that first popped up last November.

The 25-year-old had his name in headlines earlier this week when it was learned that veteran journeyman signal-caller Tyrod Taylor will likely receive some first-team reps this month as both Taylor and Jones continue to learn a new system under Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. Jones is in a contract year after the Giants declined the fifth-year option attached to his rookie deal this spring, but Kafka expressed confidence in the fourth-year pro on Thursday.

"Daniel is doing a great job," Kafka remarked. "We’re throwing a lot at him offensively, we’ve seen a lot defensively. It’s all just going to help us. I’m really proud of where the staff has come to where we’re at."

The Giants next host the Cincinnati Bengals at MetLife Stadium on Sunday evening.
