Giants' Golden Tate won't play vs. Washington due to 'overall issues with effort and performance'

It was reported on Friday that New York Giants head coach Joe Judge was considering benching Golden Tate for the comments he made during "Monday Night Football" against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Judge held Tate out of Wednesday's practice, and it didn't take long for him to make a ruling on the matter. The wide receiver reportedly won't make the trip to Washington for Sunday's game due to "overall issues with effort and performance," according to NFL Network's Kim Jones and Ian Rapoport.

Tate made his displeasure with the number of targets headed his way known on Monday night, yelling "throw me the ball" after grabbing a late touchdown. His wife also shared her frustration on Instagram.

New York was looking to trade him at the deadline but never found a suitor.

Tate hasn't had a great year under Judge. He's caught just 22 passes for 226 yards and has been targeted six times over the last three games. The Giants can move on from the veteran this offseason, but they'll take on a dead-cap hit of $4.7 million.

If he continues to be disgruntled, the Giants also could try to move him ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft in exchange for draft capital.
