Giants hire Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen as next GM

The New York Giants have found their next general manager.

According to Giants.com senior writer Michael Eisen, Schoen was the first of nine candidates to interview for the post last week. Schoen has spent the last five seasons as the Bills' assistant GM.

"We are pleased and proud to name Joe as our general manager," Giants president John Mara said, per Eisen. "Throughout our search, Joe impressed us with his ability to communicate a progressive and comprehensive vision for our team. His philosophy and collaborative approach to building a roster and coaching staff align with what we were looking for in a general manager."

Schoen will replace Dave Gettleman, who had been New York's GM for the last four seasons, before announcing his retirement earlier this month. Including his time with the Bills, the 42-year-old has 20 years of NFL executive and scouting experience.

Schoen worked in the Miami Dolphins' organization before joining the Bills in 2017. Schoen and general manager Brandon Beane have helped make Buffalo win the last two AFC East titles and the Bills will visit the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday for a divisional playoff game.

"It is an honor to accept the position of general manager of the New York Giants, he said. "I want to thank John Mara and (chairman) Steve Tisch and their families for this tremendous opportunity. And obviously I am grateful to Brandon and the Bills for the experience I have had in Buffalo."

The new hire added that his "immediate focus" is to hire a head coach. The Giants fired head coach Joe Judge on Jan. 11 after just two seasons on the job.
