Giants linked to top free agent with connections to Brian Daboll

With plenty of money to spend, the New York Giants could be major players in free agency.

With a few holes to fix defensively, Pro Football Focus believes New York may be a frontrunner to land All-Pro safety Jordan Poyer thanks to his ties with head coach Brian Daboll.

“Predicting Poyer to the Giants feels too simple, but there are too many connections between him and the Giants coaching staff/front office with Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen,” PFF said. “Additionally, both Julian Love and Tony Jefferson are set to be free agents, leaving a hole at safety, which Poyer would be able to fill. …He would be a huge addition to the Giants' secondary, which struggled to contain some of the better passing offenses in the league.”

Daboll and Poyer spent four seasons together in Buffalo from 2018 to 2021 when Daboll was the Bills offensive coordinator.

A Pro Bowler in 2022, Poyer allowed 20 completions on 29 attempts for 184 yards with eight passes defensed and four interceptions in coverage. The 31-year-old has thrived the last two seasons in particular, allowing a completion percentage of just 57.9 with nine interceptions and 17 pass breakups.

With Jefferson, Love and Landon Collins hitting the open market, the Giants are losing 890 coverage snaps, eight forced incompletions, six pass breakups and three interceptions.

New York has just three safeties under contract in 2023 — Xavier McKinney, Dane Belton and Jason Pinnock. Of the three, McKinney is the only one who’s ever started double-digit games in a season. Adding Poyer would give the Giants a stabilizing presence in the defensive backfield to lead a group of safeties whose average age is 23.
