Giants rookie safety Dane Belton has broken collarbone
The New York Giants spent a fourth-round pick on former Iowa Hawkeyes safety Dane Belton. Belton reportedly impressed defensive coordinator Don "Wink" Martindale and head coach Brian Daboll throughout spring and summer workouts and practices, but it appears the 21-year-old will now spend the majority of August as a spectator.
According to Ryan Novozinsky of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com and Jordan Raanan of ESPN, Belton broke his collarbone on Saturday. Raanan tweeted that Belton, who had his arm in a sling on Monday, "will be sidelined an extended period of time" but also added that "there still remains hope he can be ready for the start of the season."
The Giants open the preseason at the New England Patriots on Aug. 11 and will begin the regular season at the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 11.
The Giants signed veteran safety Andrew Adams last week, and Novozinsky explained that Adams could replace Belton as New York's third safety in the dime package behind Xavier McKinney and Julian Love. In total, Adams has logged 35 career regular-season starts and appeared in 87 regular-season contests across a first stint with the Giants and, most recently, as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
