Giants to decide on Daniel Jones' fifth-year option before 2022 NFL Draft?

New York Giants quarterback and 2019 first-round draft selection Daniel Jones didn't offer any real hints earlier this month regarding general manager Joe Schoen and company picking up the fifth-year option attached to his rookie contract before the May 2 deadline for such decisions.

According to Dianna Russini of ESPN, it appears the Giants haven't yet made a final call on the matter:

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Jones would be owed a fully guaranteed salary of around $22.38 million for 2023 on the option. If the Giants decline the option, as most expect they will, the 24-year-old will essentially enter the summer on a one-year "prove it" deal.

Physical setbacks and turnovers are the two biggest concerns hovering over Jones' status. Jones and others associated with Big Blue have insisted they believe the neck injury that cost him the final six games of this past season won't be a lingering problem going forward. While that's a positive for all involved, Michael Eisen pointed out for the Giants' website that Jones has thrown 29 interceptions and lost 20 fumbles in 38 career NFL games and 37 starts. Such miscues cannot be linked with his neck issue.

The Giants didn't replace Jones with a proven veteran this offseason and aren't expected to use a first-round asset on a quarterback Thursday night. However, journeyman Tyrod Taylor signed with New York in March and could be given the chance to compete for the starting job in training camp and the preseason.
