With Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert under a new offensive coordinator in Greg Roman this season, the question will be how Roman creates an offense around Herbert.

The pairing of Roman and Herbert is interesting since Roman is known for rush-heavy offenses, and in particular, run offenses that involve the quarterback.

Roman hinted that Herbert could be involved in some of their run plans and designs.

"We'll give it to anybody that can gain yards. And then will Justin run the ball? ... It'll probably be more as a scrambler. Will we have some of that other stuff in our back pocket? Remains to be seen."

Roman has previously worked with great rushing quarterbacks like Colin Kaepernick and Lamar Jackson, who both set quarterback rushing records with Roman as their OC. Kaepernick broke the single-game QB rushing record with 181 rushing yards against the Green Bay Packers, while Jackson broke the single-season rushing record with 1,206 yards.

Herbert, though mobile, is not known for his rushing ability. Rather, Herbert is a pass-first quarterback. Though Roman will not likely be running Herbert near the way he did with Kaepernick or Jackson, adding in a designed run here or there could make sense.

For one, Herbert and the Chargers could certainly use some change-ups to get their offense more consistent. Second, Herbert has some advantages as a runner. At 6-foot-6, 236 lbs., he's a tough, big-bodied quarterback that not many defenders will want to bring down.

Don't count on Herbert to run all the time in 2024, but also don't be surprised to see him get a few more carries with Roman as his play-caller.
