A new face is taking first team reps for the Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker spot. It’s not Genard Avery, who was recently released due to “Not being a fit” per Gerry Dulac who was quoted on Steelers Depot. The new face is Hamilcar Rashed. He is taking the first team reps in practice and will be the starter against the Lions this week.

Who Is Hamilcar Rashed?

Coming out of Oregon State University he was a undrafted free agent who signed with the Jets. With limited playing time he did not get much opportunity to showcase his ability.  Tomlin went on to say he was a guy they had their eyes on during the draft process. As a junior Rashed had 14 sacks 22.5 tackles for loss. He popped off the screen as a play maker.

Altogether he has played well in camp for the Steelers being newly acquired on August 10th. Tj Watt went on to say that he has a lot of energy and a great arsenal of pass rush moves. I believe there is a lot of concern around the Steelers lack of depth at the position if Watt or Highsmith are injured.

The final preseason will help finalize the depth chart. With Rashed starting it will be interesting to see how he performs. With a lack of true depth at the position and Highsmith likely playing Rashed should play a great majority of the game. We will be able to see how he performs in a starting role to see the bigger picture and how good the depth behind Watt and Highsmith is.

Derrek Tuszka is also fighting for a role as well. Tuszka has been on the Steelers for a while now and was given opportunities in the regular season last year. He showed some flashes and will be getting a lot of play time this week as well.

As always thanks for reading! You can always fine great Steelers content here on Gridiron Heroics.
