It’s a difficult question to ponder, but has Las Vegas Raiders RB Zamir White done enough to take the RB1 mantle from Josh Jacobs?
The attachment to individual players from a fan’s perspective is nothing new. It’s a tale as old as time—now, for the Raiders, this is especially true when you consider the players that have called the Silver and Black their home. Unfortunately, things aren’t always simple.
When it comes to the situation surrounding Josh Jacobs, it’s two-fold. First, the NFL is a business, and the current trend has devalued the running back position to the point that it has become highly expendable. Second, the other part is legacy. By legacy, we mean the locker room, the fans, and, more importantly, the outward appearance of how the organization treats its players.
Basically, Jacobs could be out of time. He plays a position that is no longer seen as one that demands top dollar. Then we have the sudden emergence of Zamir White. With Jacobs dealing with a nagging quad injury, White has stepped up in his stead. So much so that we can ponder whether Jacobs has lost the RB1 mantle for next season. Is it fair? Of course not. But life isn’t fair.
Should the Raiders look to Zamir White as the next star running back?
Prior to Jacob’s missing time, the jury wasn’t too keen on White. However, in White’s defense, he needed consistent playing time to show what he could bring to the table. One man’s misfortune is another man’s treasure, and White has run with the opportunity.
Against the Kansas City Chiefs on Christmas Day, White forced six missed tackles (per Pro Football Focus), an amazing number. When you add in 125 yards after contact and three rushing attempts that went over 15 yards each, the case for RB1 begins to take shape.
Prior to the Chiefs’ matchup, White logged 69 yards on the ground along with a touchdown of his own in that historic blowout of the Los Angeles Chargers. Say what you will about White, but you can’t deny that he’s impressed.
The conundrum that the Raiders might face very soon is what to do with White. Will they give him Jacob’s job, or is the Georgia product not quite ready yet?
