After two days off, the Indianapolis Colts held their seventh training camp session. Sunday in Westfield was a stereotypical humid August day in Indiana. Some Colts players required extra attention from the training staff before practice because of this. For those that may not know, high humidity creates a high chance for players to suffer from muscle cramps. Other players continued to stay loose throughout the entirety of the day to combat the cramps.
Indianapolis Colts Seventh Session Riddled with Drops
It seems that practically every receiver dropped the ball at some point during the day. First, second, and third string wideouts came off their small break flat and slightly unfocused. The passer had no effect, as the receivers dropped passes from Matt Ryan, Nick Foles, and Jack Coan.
Matt Ryan in 11-on-11 work went 11-18, including four drops. Four drops is not too bad but the drops were consistent starting in the earlier phases of practice with at least four more drops then. Ryan was picked off by Stephon Gilmore in 7-on-7s and Isaiah Rodgers in 1-on-1s. These are Ryan’s third and four interceptions thrown in training camp.
Nyheim Hines joined in on the party. He fumbled the ball without contact and Gilmore was able to scoop it up for a takeaway. The good thing is that this is still training camp, the team has the opportunity to get the bad stuff out before it really matter.
Indianapolis Colts Defense Brings the Pressure
The offense had a bit of a rough day, this could have been a slow start to the week. Or we could give credit to the ability and ferocity of the defense.
Gilmore made big plays in team work and he continues to show why the front office secured him this offseason. He started out strong with some lock down defense on WR1 Michael Pittman Jr. in the first 1-on-1 rep of the day. Kwity Paye helped the defense build more momentum with a strong showing in the lineman 1-on-1 drills.
Defenders Dayo Odeyingbo and Eric Johnson II got to Foles in the backfield early in live game action. Odeyingbo is showing great progress and Johnson II showed flashes of solid play in Sunday’s practice. Rookie safety Nick Cross closed down the gap and stopped Philip Lindsey at the line of scrimmage. The pressure from the defense came from everyone, Odeyingbo and others continued to get to the QB. Rookie JoJo Domann broke through the trenches and made a tackle in the backfield on the ball carrier.
The Bright Spots of The Offense
Camp star Parris Campbell continues to shine. He started his day with a nice catch over Kenny Moore III. Third string QB Jack Coan showed his skills with a rollout and a throw off his back foot with a completion to Samson Nacua. There were bumps in the road until Ryan connected with Mo Alie-Cox to start 11-on-11 work.
Rookie Andrew Ogletree started full scrimmage running with the ones. It is clear his past performance has been noticed by the coaching staff. Ogletree had a few good catches throughout the session. Veteran wideout Keke Coutee had himself a pair of catches from Foles. Coutee is fighting for a roster spot and this bright spot in a tough day for the offense could help earn him that spot.
Nick Foles showed some solid play all day and had his best play on a 65-yard touchdown ball to speedster Ashton Dulin. Dulin has had a great training camp, making the competition for the wide receiver spots a tough one. Another bright spot is Matt Pryor, who held his own against Yannick Ngakoue. Pryor had his best day of camp yet, he seems to have figured out how to slow down the unlimited battery of Ngakoue.
