Injury update on Daniel Jones raises questions

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones cleared a huge hurdle in his potential return to action.

It was reported on Monday morning, however, that Danny Dimes was cleared for full contact prior to the team's Week 8 overtime loss against the New York Jets as he recovers from his neck injury. The news raises questions as to why Jones wasn't at least dressed in uniform as an emergency option for the G-Men, who ended up having to turn to third-string rookie signal-caller Tommy DeVito on Sunday after veteran backup Tyrod Taylor suffered a rib injury.

Jones was ruled out for Sunday's contest on Friday.

The already banged-up and anemic Giants offense produced historically poor numbers through the air in the 13-10 loss to the Jets, as they lost for the fifth time in their last six games to fall to 2-6.

Head coach Brian Daboll's squad had just 12 first downs, and while the Giants churned out a season high 203 rushing yards, it took 52 attempts to do so. Running back Saquon Barkley ran for a season best 128 yards, but it came on a career high 36 carries.

The team's leading receiver this year (tight end Darren Waller) exited the contest early with a hamstring injury after making just one catch on two targets for four yards.

DeVito and Taylor combined for -9 passing yards, which was the lowest output for a NFL team since 2000.

The 13th-year pro finished the game 4-for-7 for eight passing yards with no touchdowns, no interceptions and 33 rushing yards via five carries. The youngster went 2-for-7 for -1 passing yard with no touchdowns, no interceptions and four rushing attempts for 12 yards and one score.

Jones has a 68.9 completion percentage with 884 passing yards, two touchdowns and six interceptions for a 71.7 quarterback rating over five games while adding 38 carries for 197 rushing yards and one touchdown on the ground. Taylor has gone 57-for-87 for 579 passing yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions (92.1 quarterback rating) and added 98 yards on 22 carries across seven games (three starts).

DeVito made his NFL debut on Sunday.
