Insider shares worrisome update about contract status of 49ers' Nick Bosa

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport indicated Monday that San Francisco 49ers superstar pass-rusher Nick Bosa could remain away from the team through the start of the regular season.

"They're not there yet, and I don't get the sense they're close at all, so I don't get the sense anything is imminent," Rapoport said about contract talks between the two parties during an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," per David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. "But at least it sounds like there's been some level of conversation...It's like there's been at least some touching base."

Niners general manager John Lynch has publicly voiced optimism throughout the summer about getting a deal done with Bosa, who is in the final season of his rookie contract and has given no sign he'll report to the team without a new deal. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year is expected to become the highest-paid edge-rusher in NFL history, but it's unclear when he'll put pen to paper on such an agreement.

"Their offer is substantial, and there's been, I know, kind of back and forth," Rapoport explained. "[He's] going to make a lot of money. It's really just a question of how [much], and when Nick Bosa and his agent go, 'Alright, this is proper.'"

The 49ers open the regular season at the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 10 with or without Bosa and are expected to compete for more than just the division title assuming the All-Pro is in the lineup. As of Monday afternoon, OddsChecker listed the Niners second among betting favorites behind only the Philadelphia Eagles (+330) at +400 odds to represent the NFC in Super Bowl LVIII.

For what it's worth, Rapoport didn't sound panicked about the Bosa-49ers situation.

"...I know this probably doesn't make anyone feel better, but there still is a lot of time," Rapoport added. "I mean, Bosa, I'm sure, keeps himself in unbelievable shape. I don't think he's going to need a lot of an acclimation period. So even if he shows up five days from now, I'm sure he'll be ready for the season."
