49ers GM John Lynch shares optimistic Nick Bosa update

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch isn't panicking over superstar pass-rusher Nick Bosa skipping the early days of training camp while seeking a massive contract extension.

"I don't like this," Lynch said Monday about Bosa's absences, as shared by David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. "I don't like not having one of our best players here. We've got a really good track record that I'm proud of as a group of having our players in. But I also understand it, and understand that we're going to have to exhibit some patience, and understand that, ultimately, this thing will work out. I'm very confident in that."

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged Sunday that he had "no updates" regarding Bosa's situation.

The 25-year-old in the final year of his rookie contract led the NFL last regular season with 18.5 sacks en route to earning Defensive Player of the Year honors, and Bosa understandably wants deserved guaranteed money beyond just the upcoming campaign.

Former agent and current CBS Sports NFL contracts and salary cap expert Joel Corry noted last week that Bosa could be looking to become the NFL's highest-paid defensive player this summer. Corry also pointed out the 49ers can fine Bosa $40,000 for each day of training camp he misses during his protest, but Lynch indicated the team won't go down that route.

"I don't think that's really necessary," Lynch said about potentially punishing Bosa financially. "That's not going to get him in here."

The 49ers are expected to chase a third consecutive trip to the NFC Championship Game as they attempt to play on Super Bowl Sunday for the first time since February 2020. Lynch suggested getting Bosa into camp sooner than later could ultimately help San Francisco achieve the club's lofty goals.

"I think there's a point that everybody, as long as I played in Year 13, people used to ask, do you need training camp? I needed three weeks," Lynch said about his own experiences. "I needed that to get ready. And so I don't know what that right time period [is]. We've talked a lot about it internally, but I think that's important to give yourself the best chance to not only play at the highest level but to stay healthy and get yourself primed and ready, calloused to play."

While Lynch added Monday he is "very confident" the franchise will get a deal done with Bosa, it remains to be seen if the All-Pro will report to camp before the 49ers open the preseason at the Las Vegas Raiders on Aug. 13.
