Is Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky a fantasy football sleeper?

It is understandable that Pittsburgh Steelers tight end and 2021 second-round draft pick Pat Freiermuth is being mentioned as a "potential first-time Pro Bowler" and a "fantasy football breakout candidate" for the 2022 season even though the Steelers technically haven't named a starting quarterback heading into training camp sessions.

Freiermuth ended his rookie campaign which he spent a majority of playing with a "washed" version of Ben Roethlisberger with 60 catches for 497 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. It's now expected the 23-year-old will soon become a favorite target of likely starting signal-caller Mitchell Trubisky, who is looking to resurrect his career as Roethlisberger's successor.

Per a majority of reports, Trubisky has seemingly already won the QB1 gig over first-round draft selection Kenny Pickett and backup Mason Rudolph. While the 27-year-old flamed out in a big way the last time he was an NFL starter with the Chicago Bears in January 2021 before he spent last season as a backup with the Buffalo Bills, Chris Towers of CBS Sports recently explained why Trubisky could be a sleeper in summer fantasy-football drafts.

"I'm not buying the notion that a year spent with Brian Daboll and the Bills organization magically made Trubisky much better just because Josh Allen took a big step forward with them -- I think that suggestion takes too much credit away from Allen and the work he did to get better," Towers noted. "That being said, we've seen Trubisky put together stretches of solid Fantasy player in the past, including as recently as the final six games of 2020 when he averaged 20.1 PPR points per game. Trubisky is capable of four 400-plus yards in a season, and the Steelers figure to still feature plenty of short, easy throws to give Trubisky a decent floor. He'll have to hold off Pickett, but I could see Trubisky being a viable low-end starting option."

Trubisky has seemingly earned the trust of Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin. Assuming Trubisky proves to be more than a mere game-manager, he could also ultimately become a top fantasy-football steal at his position of the season.
