Jaguars released Tim Tebow because of lack of special teams experience?

The inevitable occurred Tuesday when the Jacksonville Jaguars released former quarterback and current tight end Tim Tebow less than a week after he failed to impress in Saturday's preseason opener versus the Cleveland Browns:

Specifically, the 34-year-old, who hasn't appeared in an NFL regular-season game since the 2012 campaign, didn't log a single special-teams rep in Saturday's loss to the Browns. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, coach Urban Meyer told reporters Tuesday that Tebow's inability to help that portion of Jacksonville's roster cost him his chance at a comeback.

"It was special teams," Meyer explained. "This whole roster management is really critical as we journey here into the next two weeks. Two of the special teams phases are tackling and he had never tackled. . . . The tight end position is one of those [positions], and tailback, if you can’t contribute on special teams, that’s a tough go."

It's widely believed Tebow has played his last down of competitive football at the highest level.
