The Quincy Williams Hit

The New York Jets first preseason game did not get off to great start for many reasons. The first team defense didn’t put up much of a fight against Quarterback Jalen Hurts and the Eagles first team offense. What was an egregious play made by Jets linebacker Quincy Williams. Jalen Hurts had just broke out to the right on a QB scramble while being chased by Jets Defensive End Jermaine Johnson. On a play that would have led to 4th down and most likely a field goal attempt; he delivers a crushing late hit to the QB who was already out of bounds.

Earlier in the offseason Williams was interviewing with New York Jets reporter Ethan Greenberg. He stated that he wanted to improve on not always going for the big hit.  Instead of him making a play on the ball or wrapping up a ball carrier, his propensity to head hunt has left him out of position on many plays. Obviously, talent is there and undeniable. Very few players in the league can hit Derrick Henry like this.

The Quincy Williams Fine

The NFL levied a fine of $10,609 for the late hit. This amount is protocol for the league’s first-time offenders. Jets Head Coach Robert Saleh stated “Those are the plays that Quincy has to get out of his games he wants to become the linebacker that I think he can be, that we all think he can be”. Williams has a big season ahead of him. He is entering his first full season as a Jets starting linebacker. However, Will he be able to eliminate the big hits? Or will he receive more hits to the wallet.
