Jets' Zach Wilson promoted to primary backup vs. Lions

The grounding of New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson lasted three weeks.

As noted by Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post and Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, head coach Robert Saleh confirmed Wednesday that Wilson has been promoted to serve as the primary backup behind starter Mike White for when the 7-6 Jets host the 6-7 Detroit Lions this Sunday.

Saleh hinted Monday that Wilson would be elevated on the depth chart after backup and veteran Joe Flacco had a rough go of it filling in for an injured White during this past Sunday's 20-12 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Flacco lost a fumble, completed just one-of-three passes for one yard, and showed little mobility in what ultimately could be his last in-game performance of his Gang Green tenure.

Saleh initially demoted Wilson to third-string and scout team duties following his poor showing against the New England Patriots on Nov. 20 and his refusal to accept responsibility for the club's defeat that day. While White has played admirably and become a fan-favorite the past three weeks, the Jets have lost two straight with the 27-year-old under center.

More worrisome, White is dealing with an unspecified rib injury coming off Week 14. His health coupled with Wednesday's development caused some to believe Saleh wants Wilson to take at least some snaps versus the Lions this Sunday, but the coach insisted it is merely a "coincidence" the second-year pro will be QB2 for that contest. Saleh and company expect White to be ready to start what could be viewed as a must-win game for New York.

Per ESPN, the Jets are on the outside looking in regarding the playoff picture and ninth in the conference standings even though they share the same record with the Patriots and Los Angeles Chargers. New England swept New York in the season series, while the Chargers hold the tiebreaker advantage over the Jets thanks to winning percentages in conference play.
