Joe Montana Super Bowl jersey sells for record-shattering price at auction

A jersey worn by Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana in two different Super Bowls for the San Francisco 49ers has sold for a record-shattering price at auction. 

The jersey went for $1.212 million at collectibles marketplace Goldin, beating the previous record set by a Tom Brady Super Bowl jersey. The Brady jersey, from his 2021 championship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, sold for $480,000.

Montana's jersey was worn during the 49ers' wins in Super Bowls XIX over the Miami Dolphins and Super Bowl XXIII against the Cincinnati Bengals. The latter Super Bowl is the infamous "John Candy" game where Montana led the 49ers on a late game-winning touchdown drive after pointing out actor John Candy sitting in the stands to his teammates. 

Montana was never supposed to wear the jersey in the second game until his wife removed it from a scrapbook and packed it in his bag the morning of Super Bowl XXIII with a note suggesting he wear it again. So he did. It brought him just enough luck to win another championship. 

Along with that jersey, a second Montana Super Bowl jersey also sold for more than $700,000 this week through Goldin. That jersey was worn during the 49ers' 55-10 win over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV. 

It is not surprising that Montana's Super Bowl jerseys are in such high demand given his success in the game.

He went 4-0 in his Super Bowl appearances, throwing for 1,142 yards, 11 touchdowns and perhaps even more incredibly zero interceptions.

He also orchestrated one of the most significant drives in Super Bowl history to beat the Bengals.
