Justin Herbert ready for Chargers' quarterback competition

When the Los Angeles Chargers drafted Justin Herbert with the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, they didn't necessarily have intentions of making him the starting quarterback right away.

With Tyrod Taylor in the fold, the Chargers are more inclined to roll with the more experienced quarterback heading into the upcoming season, but that doesn't mean Herbert won't be given a chance to prove himself. In fact, he's actually looking forward to the quarterback competition.

"Competition's great for everyone. He's going to push me and I'm going to push him," Herbert said in an interview with The MMQB's Albert Breer, according to Sports Illustrated's Jenna West. "He's had a lot of success and I'm going to do everything I can to learn from him, do whatever I can to help him. At the end of the day, it's all about the team and we're both professionals now. I'm really excited to learn from him."

Taylor undeniably has more experience. The 30-year-old is 23-21-1 with 9,562 yards, 54 touchdowns and 20 interceptions in his nine-year career. That's better than some other quarterbacks currently in the NFL, believe it or not.

Meanwhile, Herbert had a strong senior campaign at Oregon, throwing for 3,471 yards, 32 touchdowns and six interceptions with a 66.8 completion percentage. He also added 50 yards and four touchdowns rushing.

Although the quarterback competition will heat up quickly, it seems that the Chargers will be starting the season with Taylor as QB1. If Herbert can win over the coaches, then we may see him in NFL action sooner rather than later.
