The Kansas City Chiefs continue to host players on top-30 visits and one of their latest reported visits is a player with local ties.
As first reported by his mother, University of Northern Iowa DT Khristian Boyd is set to take a pre-draft visit with the Chiefs. Bleacher Report's Ryan Fowler later confirmed the report, also listing 10 other NFL clubs with which Boyd will have a pre-draft visit.
Boyd is a Kansas City local. He was an All-Conference and All-District football player at Blue Springs HS in Blue Springs, Missouri. He's also expected to be among those invited to the Chiefs' local pro day in April.
What is a top-30 visit?
NFL teams are allotted 30 instances to host upcoming prospects on pre-draft visits at team facilities. These visits happen with different goals in mind as part of the pre-draft fact-gathering experience. Teams will bring in players with injury history, or character concerns, or simply just bring in players they want to get to know better.
The Chiefs use their top 30 visits in several different ways, but it almost always denotes some level of interest. Often they'll bring in players who are expected to be priority free agents, to woo them to sign with the team after the draft. Players who are expected to be drafted are also among pre-draft visits. Just last season Kansas City hosted a pair of their draft picks (Rashee Rice & BJ Thompson) on top-30 visits.
How does UNI DT Khristian Boyd fit with the Chiefs?
Beyond the local ties, Boyd is the type of defensive tackle that the Chiefs could use some depth at. They've got plenty of options for the big, run-stuffing defensive tackles, but they could use some depth behind players like Chris Jones and Tershawn Wharton. Boyd certainly can get after the QB some, with a 16.4% pass rush win rate during his collegiate career per PFF.
Listed at 6-foot-4 and 317 pounds, Boyd can align anywhere from one through three tech on the defensive interior. Boyd makes up for his lack of length with elite quickness and brute strength.
Boyd has plenty of experience under his belt, too. He boasts 31 games played with over 1,550 snaps in the past three seasons at UNI. He's posted a whopping 69 total pressures during that span, including seven sacks.
