King of Props: Feed the new slot machine

The NFL raises the curtain on the 2022 season with a marquee matchup between two of its premier teams. As is tradition for the Thursday opener, the hosts are the defending champions — in this case, the Rams — and they welcome this year’s Super Bowl favorite, the Bills. With LA’s Matthew Stafford and Buffalo’s Josh Allen providing an aerial showcase, we like a prop to pop:

The bet: Over 3½ receptions for Bills wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie (+124 FanDuel)

Through his first five seasons, McKenzie has largely been a role player, earning just 18 starts while excelling as a kick returner. But he appears ready for his star turn, having secured the role of slot receiver following the departure of Cole Beasley.

When a positive COVID test forced Beasley to miss the Week 16 game against the Patriots last year, McKenzie filled in and caught 11 of the 12 passes thrown to him for 125 yards. He played on 85% of the offensive snaps that day, which was the only time he exceeded one-third all season.

Defending slot receivers was a weakness for the Rams in 2021 and figures to be again this year. Slot corner Troy Hill has returned to the team after surrendering a 77% catch rate in his one season with the Browns, but he isn’t the answer. The shifty McKenzie should be getting open all night to deliver this prop … at plus money, no less.
