Kyle Shanahan called Matt LaFleur about potential Aaron Rodgers trade

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch admitted his organization reached out to the Green Bay Packers about the status of quarterback and reigning Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers, who allegedly wants out of Green Bay but may not be officially traded until at least early June, if at all.

San Francisco ultimately drafted North Dakota State Bison quarterback Trey Lance with the third overall pick on Thursday night, and 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan explained during Monday's edition of "The Rich Eisen Show" that his team was never close to acquiring Rodgers ahead of or during the draft.

"Yeah, the exact truth is I don’t want to wake up the next day on Friday and see Aaron Rodgers, one of the best quarterbacks in this league, traded without doing any due diligence on him," Shanahan told Eisen, according to Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. "So, I just called [Packers coach] Matt [LaFleur]and asked him if there was anything to it, and Matt told me I’d be wasting my time if we had Lynch call, so Lynch did not call anyone the next day. But, yes, I did reach to Matt the night before and asked him, 'Hey, man, I don’t want to wake up the next day and see that Aaron was traded for something, and I didn’t even at least look into it.' That’s what I did with Matt. He gave me a very quick answer. . . . That worked out I guess. We were happy to get our guy, and hopefully it’ll work out for them."

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said last week that Rodgers will "be our quarterback for the foreseeable future," and Gutekunst also denied a report that the three-time NFL MVP won't return to the club unless it parts ways with the GM.

The 49ers, meanwhile, are seemingly now all-in on Lance being their next franchise signal-caller.
