Packers GM: Aaron Rodgers will 'be our QB for the foreseeable future'

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is signed through the 2023 NFL season but may have a future hosting the popular quiz show “Jeopardy!” when he's ready to call time on his playing days. Add in that the Packers used a first-round pick on signal-caller Jordan Love last spring, and there has been plenty of speculation that Rodgers' days with Green Bay are numbered.

General manager Brian Gutekunst suggested differently when speaking with reporters on Monday.

"Aaron’s our guy. He’s going to be our quarterback for the foreseeable future," Gutekunst explained, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. Gutekunst added that the two parties are "working through" ways to potentially decrease salary-cap hits currently attached to Rodgers' contract.

The league-wide salary cap is down roughly $16 million from the previous season due to financial hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and clubs have used methods such as adding voidable years to contracts to handle cap-related setbacks. Assuming Gutekunst's commitment to his current starting QB beyond 2021 is true, the club's decision to use a valuable asset to acquire Love becomes even more questionable.
