Lions don't view Jared Goff as bridge QB
Shortly after this year's NFL Draft, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff admitted it was "a nice vote of confidence" his new employer did not use a first-round selection on a rookie signal-caller. The Lions acquired Goff via a March trade with the Los Angeles Rams even though Detroit was linked with some quarterbacks in mock drafts.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell had only positive things to say about Goff early into organized team activities, and general manager Brad Holmes recently told the club's website he believes Detroit has a long-term answer at the sport's most important position atop the depth chart today.
"I never viewed him as a bridge option," Holmes said of Goff. "He's been a winning quarterback. I think his resume speaks for itself."
Such comments are easy to make over a month before training camp sessions begin and well ahead of preseason action, but it can't be forgotten that Goff fell out of favor with the Rams largely because of his underwhelming play. If he wins early and often with Detroit, it's likely this marriage will happily exist well beyond the upcoming campaign.
