Lions GM: QB Jared Goff 'played really good football' late in season

The Detroit Lions began the 2021 NFL season with eight consecutive losses heading into their bye week before first-year head coach Dan Campbell took over as their play-caller in place of offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn, who saw his Detroit tenure end on Monday after a single season. Quarterback Jared Goff produced positive responses to that change during the campaign's second half and threw nine touchdown passes with just two interceptions over his final four starts, three of which he won.

Lions general manager Brad Holmes spoke highly of Goff during Tuesday's media availability.

"You talk about will, talk about grit, that’s why he fit from the very get-go," Holmes said of Goff, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "And the success he had late, it all came from that — because he had rough patches. He had some adversity that he had to fight through. And I give him all the credit in the world that he stayed the course. And some tweaks were made, some changes were made, some reinforcements and players emerged. But he played really good football."

It was reported at the start of Thanksgiving week that Goff and Lynn "never really clicked" working together. While Goff initially denied that story, it was hardly a surprise when Campbell announced Monday that Lynn was out as OC.

By all accounts, Goff will be given the opportunity to continue to thrive under Campbell next fall regardless of who is calling plays for the Lions at that time.
