Lions HC Dan Campbell regrets decision to kick FG late in loss to Vikings

The Detroit Lions saw a 10-point fourth-quarter lead against the Minnesota Vikings evaporate, leading to a heartbreaking 28-24 Week 3 loss.

Leading 24-21 with just over a minute left in the fourth quarter, the Lions faced a fourth and four from the Minnesota 36-yard-line.

With the Vikings down to only one timeout, a fourth-down conversion would've won the game for the Lions. However, head coach Dan Campbell went away from his usual aggressiveness, opting instead to try a 54-yard field goal.

Unfortunately for Campbell and the Lions, Austin Seibert's attempt missed wide to the right, keeping the Vikings' hopes alive. Three plays into Minnesota's ensuing drive, quarterback Kirk Cousins connected with K.J. Osborn on a 28-yard touchdown for the game-winning score.

After the game, Campbell took the heat for the loss, citing his fourth-down decision as the reason.

"I frickin' regret my decision there at the end," Campbell said. "Should have gone for it on fourth down. I told the team that. I should have gone for it."

Campbell's starting quarterback Jared Goff agreed that the Lions should've gone for the win on fourth down and regrets not pushing to stay on the field.

"I wish I would have said something to Dan, and I didn't," Goff told reporters after the game. "I'm sure he would have let us have it if I had done that."

The loss dropped the Lions to 1-2 on the season. They'll look to rebound next Sunday when they return home to host the Seattle Seahawks.
