Matthew Stafford, Sean McVay celebrated Rams trade in Mexico

The Los Angeles Rams completed a trade for Detroit Lions veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford over the weekend. Apparently, it didn't take too long for Stafford and head coach Sean McVay to get acquainted.

According to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, Stafford and McVay had dinner together in Los Cabos, Mexico, shortly after the deal was complete. They were joined by Stafford's wife Kelly and McVay's fiancée Veronika.

"Once the deal was agreed to, some 1,100 miles south of L.A., McVay and Stafford were sitting down for dinner to celebrate a fresh start of their own," Breer writes. "The coach and his new quarterback happened to be among a number of NFL people in Cabo last week—Saints coach Sean Payton and QB Drew Brees, Rams LT Andrew Whitworth and others were nearby, too, over the last few days."

Stafford and McVay connected so quickly thanks to Kelly Stafford. McVay is friends with Buffalo Bills receivers coach Chad Hall, who is Kelly's brother. The connection led to a relationship between the Staffords and McVay in recent years, Breer reports.

Stafford reportedly preferred to be traded out West, and he got his wish, but several teams were vying for his services, including the Washington Football Team, Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts and San Francisco 49ers.

Things could have been very different for the 32-year-old, and he might not have been celebrating in Mexico if the Lions sent him elsewhere.
