Miami Dolphins to convert Hard Rock Stadium into drive-in theater

It appears the Miami Dolphins are borrowing an idea from the New York Yankees amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Recently, reports surfaced that the Bronx Bombers will convert a parking lot outside of Yankee Stadium into a drive-in movie theater for the summer months when the Yanks normally would be playing games at the ballpark.

On Tuesday, ESPN's Cameron Wolfe wrote that the Dolphins will transform an area inside Hard Rock Stadium into a similar drive-in theater.

The stadium's official Twitter account shared artist renderings:

Per an official statement shared by ESPN, Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium vice chairman and CEO Tom Garfinkel explained that the venue won't simply be showing summer flicks:

"We've spent several weeks planning this to be able to provide people with a safe option to go out and enjoy movies, classic Dolphins content, concerts, and celebrate 2020 graduates. It's a fundamental human need to physically experience and celebrate events and experiences together, and we're trying to provide options for everyone where they can be safely socially distant and socially present at the same time."

Don't assume Tuesday's news means the Dolphins don't intend to host football games in September. Earlier this month, Garfinkel unveiled a proposal and protocols that could allow a percentage of spectators to fill Hard Rock Stadium seats for regular-season NFL contests if the campaign begins on-time during the pandemic.
