The Minnesota Vikings agreed to an extension with an overperforming player from the 2020 draft class Thursday morning. The Vikings have now made two big extensions in the past few weeks. They extended T.J. Hockenson at the end of August, making him one of the highest-paid tight ends in the league.

They took care of the defense on Thursday.

The Minnesota Vikings extend Josh Metellus

According to Adam Schefter with ESPN, the Vikings agreed to an extension with safety Josh Metellus. The two-year extension is worth up to $13 million. $6 million of that will be guaranteed.

The Vikings drafted Metellus in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Metellus has been one a beast on the Vikings special teams unit. According to Kevin Seifert with ESPN, the Vikings are making Metellus a team captain and are planning to give him more responsibilities on defense:

“He has long been one of the Vikings’ top special teams players and was named its captain for the 2023 season. But Metellus also has been tapped for a more robust role on defense this season by new defensive coordinator Brian Flores.

The Vikings are wise to try and make these sorts of signings now. They have another 2020 draft pick they have to worry about extending shortly, Justin Jefferson. And he won’t be nearly as cheap as Hockenson and Metellus.
