New Browns QB confident ahead of first practice

Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco expressed confidence on Wednesday ahead of his first practice with his new team.

"I definitely believe I can still play," Flacco said, per ESPN's Jake Trotter. "I'm a veteran guy that's been around a lot at this point in the season with a team that's doing well. So, I think there's a lot of different things I that I can bring to the table."

The Browns signed the 38-year-old to their practice squad on Sunday and to their active roster on Monday. The addition came in the wake of starter Deshaun Watson's season-ending shoulder injury.

Flacco is expected to compete with P.J. Walker for the backup job behind rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

"Whatever my role ends up being and wherever this takes me, then I'll do my best at that," Flacco said, according to Trotter.

The former 18th overall pick spent the 2019 season with the Denver Broncos and 2020-2022 with the New York Jets but is best known for his 11 years with one of Cleveland's biggest rivals, the Baltimore Ravens.

The Ravens selected Flacco in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft and he started and played in every contest after joining the franchise until midway through the 2018 campaign, except for during the 2015 season. He suffered a season-ending torn ACL and MCL in Week 11 that year and was replaced by then-rookie Lamar Jackson after injuring his hip in Week 9 in 2018.

Flacco led Baltimore to six playoff appearances in his first seven seasons, going 10-5 in the postseason including a perfect 4-0 mark on his way to a Super Bowl XLVII title and game MVP honors.

He played in five games and made four starts (including in Week 18) for the Jets last season, posting a 57.6 completion percentage for 1,051 passing yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions with a 75.2 quarterback rating.
