For tight end Jared Wiley, getting drafted by the reigning Super Bowl champions was an incredible honor. He was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
And now he's preparing to play in the NFL, and along side star tight end Travis Kelce.
When speaking with reporters, Wiley revealed that he feels "starstruck" to have the opportunity to learn from Kelce. The tight end reveled that he has been studying Kelce for years, so now he gets to learn from him directly.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Kelce also worked with Wiley prior to the draft, the veteran tight end revealed on his New Heights podcast.
"It was good seeing them," he continued. "And on top of that, it was good seeing some of the young guys... Our newest draft pick was out there. He was undrafted at this point when I met him and was running around with him. But we ended up picking him in the fourth round, Jared Wiley out of TCU. He was down there. That is a big dude out there, galloping around. . . He was down there having some fun and looking good."
"He's a big old Clydesdale," Jason quipped.
"Yeah, he is," Travis replied. "He's a galloper, he's a big dude, too, man."
Picking Wiley this year could prove to work out in the Chiefs favor. Having to plan for life after Kelce is a reality Kansas City is facing. And Wiley, a 6-foot-6 and 249 pound tight end, ran a 4.62s 40-yard dash at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine.
During the past two seasons at TCU, he put up over 70 catches for 765 yards and 12 touchdowns. Eight of those touchdowns came in 2023, when he led the FBS in touchdowns by a tight end.
A to Z Sports' Charles Goldman provided a quick scouting report on how Wiley can contribute.
"Wiley is best suited as a middle-of-the-field pass-catching weapon for Kansas City, but he has some upside to develop into a good blocker, too," he wrote.
