This is not how things were supposed to go for Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson in the Mile High City.

When the Denver Broncos acquired Wilson in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks back in March 2022, the star quarterback was expected to transform the franchise.

That is not what has happened thus far.

Since landing Wilson, the Broncos have gone just 6-17 and are 1-5 thus far this season. Wilson had a disastrous debut season in Denver, and while he has unquestionably been much better in 2023, his horrific Week 6 showing against the Kansas City Chiefs was basically a microcosm of just how poorly things have played out for Wilson since joining the club.

Diana Russini of The Athletic recently provided some insight into Wilson’s future with the Broncos, stating that his status with the franchise is currently “unclear” with Sean Payton at the helm.

Russini adds that another $37M of Wilson’s massive contract becomes guaranteed in March, so Denver will have to decide shortly after the Super Bowl what exactly it wants to do with the veteran.

It should also be noted that while many have questioned the relationship between Wilson and Payton, Russini says that things are going “really well” between the two parties.

Wilson has thrown for 1,305 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 65.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 99 thus far this season.

If the Broncos do ultimately decide to move on from Wilson, trading him will be an arduous process due to his age combined with his contract. Denver would surely want to reap a substantial package in return for the nine-time Pro Bowler, but whether another team would actually be willing to surrender such assets for the soon-to-be-35-year-old remains to be seen.

The Broncos will take on the Green Bay Packers next Sunday.
