Russell Wilson Linked As Potential Commanders’ QB Target
Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The Russell Wilson era has not exactly gone according to play in Denver. When the Broncos acquired him in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks in March 2022, the NFL world expected the move to transform the franchise back into contention.

Instead, Denver has gotten worse since landing Wilson, as it has gone just 6-16 dating back to last season.

As a result, some speculate that the Broncos could potentially move Wilson within the next year, and Alex Hoegler of Total Pro Sports views the Washington Commanders as a potential destination.

To be clear, it would probably be near impossible for Denver to complete a Wilson trade between now and the Oct. 31 NFL deadline, so, more than likely, if the Broncos are going to move the 34-year-old, it will almost surely have to be in the offseason.

The Commanders may need a quarterback come springtime if Sam Howell does not get it together for the remainder of this season. If that scenario arises, Washington may very well place a call to Denver to see if it can pry Wilson away.

Wilson hasn’t played poorly this year by any stretch of the imagination. He has thrown for 1,210 yards, 11 touchdowns, and two interceptions while completing 66.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 106.1. However, he is mired in a miserable situation in the Mile High City that does not seem to be getting any better.

A change of scenery could do Wilson some good, and the Commanders have a nice stable of pass-catchers—led by wide receiver Terry McLaurin—that could form a very nice aerial attack with the veteran signal-caller.

Of course, Wilson’s contract may be an issue, as the Broncos handed him a $245 million extension upon trading for him, but Washington is a desperate franchise that may be willing to take on that financial risk.
