NFL stars looking to rebound from a rough 2019

For some NFL players, 2019 didn't go as planned. These 25 players are looking to rebound from disappointing performances as we look toward the 2020 season.

1 of 25

Odell Beckham Jr., WR, Browns

Kareem Elgazzar / USA Today Sports Images

Beckham had a new start after getting traded to Cleveland last year, but he was inconsistent while fighting through a nagging injury. He managed to play all 16 regular-season games but had a career-low 65 yards receiving per game and caught only 56 percent of his targets. While Beckham did surpass 1,000 yards receiving, it was arguably the most disappointing season of his career.

Le'Veon Bell, RB, Jets

Bell finally got paid after holding out for all of 2018, but he struggled with his new team. He had just 1,250 yards from scrimmage, the second-lowest total of his career, averaging a terrible 3.2 yards per carry with the Jets.

3 of 25

Tom Brady, QB, Buccaneers

David Butler II / USA Today Sports Images

Brady led the Patriots to a 12-4 regular-season record but had one of his worst seasons in the process. He had 4,057 yards passing, his worst full-season total since 2010, and he threw only 24 touchdowns. At age 43, he hopes to rebound in Tampa Bay.

4 of 25

Bradley Chubb, DE, Broncos

Isaiah J. Downing / USA Today Sports Images

After a great rookie season in which he recorded 12 sacks, Chubb had only one sack in four games and tore his ACL last year. He's hoping to rebound in Year 3.

James Conner, RB, Steelers

Charles LeClaire / USA Today Sports Images

Conner filled in well for Le'Veon Bell in 2018, but his production wasn't as good last year. He played only 10 games due to injury, averaging 4.0 yards per carry and accumulating only 715 yards from scrimmage for the season.

6 of 25

Brandin Cooks, WR, Texans

Robert Hanashiro / USA Today Sports Images

Cooks missed two games with concussion issues last year and struggled when he did play, with only 583 yards receiving for the year. He's hoping for a restart in Houston this year after being traded.

DeSean Jackson, WR, Eagles

Bill Streicher / USA Today Sports Images

A core injury nagged Jackson for most of last season and eventually required surgery, allowing him to partake in only three regular-season games. The speedy wideout is hoping for better health in 2020.

Derwin James, S, Chargers

Kirby Lee / USA Today Sports Images

James was an All-Pro in his rookie season but played only five games last year due to injury. The Chargers struggled without him on the field.

9 of 25

Alshon Jeffery, WR, Eagles

Eric Hartline / USA Today Sports Images

The Eagles offense had problems moving the ball down the field without Jeffery, who played only 10 games in 2019 due to injury. His production was down when he did play, with only 11.4 yards per reception and 49 yards per game.

10 of 25

David Johnson, WR, Texans

Joe Camporeale / USA Today Sports Images

Johnson missed three games due to injury and seemed to fall out of favor late in 2019. After seeing only 130 touches last year, he was traded to Houston and hopes to be the Texans' bell cow back.

11 of 25

DeMarcus Lawrence, DE, Cowboys

Chuck Cook / USA Today Sports Images

After consecutive seasons with double-digit sacks, Lawrence's sack production plunged last year. He had only five sacks in 16 games, and his tackles also decreased to 45 for the season.

12 of 25

Melvin Gordon, RB, Broncos

Kirby Lee / USA Today Sports Images

Gordon held out at the beginning of 2019 with the Chargers and struggled after returning. Over 12 games, he averaged only 3.8 yards per carry and finished with only 908 yards from scrimmage. He will get a new start with the rival Broncos.

13 of 25

A.J. Green, WR, Bengals

Sam Greene / USA Today Sports Images

Green missed all of last season due to an ankle injury after playing in only nine games in 2018 because of a toe injury. He hopes to rebound at age 32 in Cincy with rookie Joe Burrow at quarterback.

14 of 25

Todd Gurley, RB, Falcons

Mark J. Rebilas / USA Today Sports Images

Gurley slowed late in the 2019 season, which was apparently a warning sign of things to come. He finished last season with only 1,064 yards from scrimmage and 3.8 yards per carry. At age 26, Gurley hopes to rebound with Atlanta.

15 of 25

Khalil Mack, LB, Bears

Quinn Harris / USA Today Sports Images

With a new defensive coordinator in Chicago, Mack was still productive last season but not at his usual level. He finished the season with 8.5 sacks, his first single-digit sack season since his rookie year in 2014.

16 of 25

Baker Mayfield, QB, Browns

David Kohl / USA Today Sports Images

Mayfield had a promising rookie season, but those strides were erased last year. Going 6-10 as a starter, Mayfield completed less than 60 percent of his passes and threw 21 interceptions. Cleveland cleaned house yet again in the offseason, bringing in a new coaching staff and front office to hopefully get Mayfield on track in his third season.

17 of 25

Sony Michel, RB, Patriots

Greg M. Cooper / USA Today Sports Images

Returning from offseason knee surgery, Michel didn't show the flash he did in his rookie season. The former Georgia star averaged only 3.7 yards per carry behind a Patriots offensive line that also had issues.

18 of 25

Von Miller, LB, Broncos

Rich Barnes / USA Today Sports Images

Transitioning to Vic Fangio's defense, Miller had one of the least productive seasons of his career in 2019. The former Defensive Player of the Year still made the Pro Bowl but had only eight sacks in 15 games.

19 of 25

Philip Rivers, QB, Colts

Denny Medley / USA Today Sports Images

The Chargers moved on from Rivers after 16 seasons, including a forgettable 2019. Rivers threw 20 interceptions in a 5-11 season but looks to rebound with a good Colts roster.

20 of 25

Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Steelers

Charles LeClaire / USA Today Sports Images

Roethlisberger suffered a season-ending elbow injury in Week 2 last season. Following elbow surgery, he's looking to rebound at age 38.

21 of 25

Mohamed Sanu, WR, Patriots

Douglas DeFelice / USA Today Sports Images

Nursing nagging injuries, Sanu had a down year in 2019 between the Falcons and Patriots with only 520 yards receiving in 15 games. The Patriots have turned the page at quarterback, but Sanu should remain a big part of their offense.

22 of 25

JuJu Smith-Schuster, WR, Steelers

Charles LeClaire / USA Today Sports Images

Smith-Schuster hoped to step up as Pittsburgh's No. 1 wideout with Antonio Brown out of the way. Instead, he floundered with Ben Roethlisberger getting hurt early in the year, accumulating only 42 catches for 552 yards in 12 games. With Big Ben back, Smith-Schuster has a good shot to rebound.

23 of 25

Adam Thielen, WR, Vikings

Quinn Harris / USA Today Sports Images

Thielen nursed a hamstring injury for much of last season, playing only 10 games with just 30 receptions for the year. He will have more pressure as the team's No. 1 wideout after the Vikings traded Stefon Diggs.

24 of 25

Leighton Vander Esch, LB, Cowboys

Matthew Emmons / USA Today Sports Images

Vander Esch made the Pro Bowl in his rookie season, but he played only nine games in his sophomore year due to a neck injury. The Cowboys defense suffered when he was out, so they need him to remain healthy this year.

25 of 25

J.J. Watt, DE, Texans

Mark J. Rebilas / USA Today Sports Images

Watt's recent history of injuries continued last year, playing only eight games during the regular season with a torn pectoral muscle. He made a quick return for the playoffs and hopes to stay on the field more in 2020.
