One tweak that has sparked Chiefs offense during playoff run

While the Kansas City Chiefs offense failed to meet expectations throughout the regular season, it's finally finding its flow, thanks to a slight tweak.

According to CBS Sports analyst Chris Trapasso, the Chiefs have run 13 personnel (one running back and three tight ends) on 23.7 percent of their offensive snaps in the postseason, the highest rate of any team. They ran this formation on 7.4 percent of offensive snaps during the regular season.

On these plays, K.C. has averaged 5.9 yards, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes has completed 5-of-7 passes for 49 yards and a TD. Another player who's benefited from these changes is running back Isiah Pacheco. The 24-year-old has rushed for 186 yards and two TDs on 39 carries in the playoffs.

While correlation doesn't imply causation, it's fair to say this change has reignited the offense. The Chiefs have averaged 26.8 points per game in the playoffs, compared to 21.8 in the regular season.

Kansas City should keep using it Sunday in the AFC championship game against Baltimore. The Ravens are first in the league in points (16.1) and fifth in yards allowed (296.4).

"There's no weakness there," Mahomes told Tracy Wolfson of CBS Sports Sunday. "It's going to take our best effort. Defense, offense, special teams, they do it all. It's always a great challenge, and that stadium is going to be rocking, so we're excited for the challenge."

As of Tuesday, FanDuel lists Baltimore as a 3.5-point favorite in its home game. Still, if the Chiefs can maintain their offensive momentum, they could pull off the upset.

Kansas City has made six consecutive conference championship appearances, winning it four times, and Mahomes is 13-3 in the postseason.
