Owner Jerry Jones: Cowboys will remain only NFL team in Dallas

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson generated headlines last month when he responded to a tweet and said that his city should be considered for any future NFL expansion team. Johnson also made it clear he works "for the residents of Dallas" and not specifically for Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who understandably would prefer for his club to remain the only pro football show in town moving forward.

Per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, Jones spoke with Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News and poured cold water over the idea that he'll ever have to share the region with a different NFL franchise.

"Well, I like the mayor," Jones explained. "I like him personally, but he doesn’t have the depth. He doesn’t have the knowledge that others have regarding how unique Dallas is and how we enjoy the interest in the Cowboys. He wouldn’t want to water that down as it relates to Dallas if he knew as much, and has spent as much time in sports as I have."

Jones later left no doubt about his feelings and declared that Dallas-Fort Worth belongs to the Cowboys.

"That’s correct," Jones remarked. "That is correct. . . . You can be rest assured that you would not have the NFL supporting another team because of the kind of value that the game and the NFL receives of having [the] Dallas Cowboys as one of its marquee teams and again, logic tells you [the NFL] wouldn’t want to water that down."

As Williams pointed out, Forbes' Mike Ozanian and Christina Settimi reported last August that the Cowboys are the NFL's most valuable franchise at $6.5 billion and "generate the most revenue ($800 million) and operating income ($280 million) in the league by a mile."

"America's Team" truly is a sports superpower all on its own.
